2023 Responsible Business Event at Chatham House

2023 Responsible Business Event at Chatham House

In February 2023, our Executive Search Researcher, Tyler Webb, was fortunate enough to represent GS2 at the Responsible Business 2023 event at the infamous Chatham House. Here he recounts the event and experience as a whole.

The event covered a broad range of topics on how to accelerate responsible business internationally. The event brought together business leaders, policymakers, academics, and NGOs to discuss topics ranging from climate change to human rights, from circular economy to social justice. The variety in the backgrounds of speakers and the audience meant that discussions were well-rounded and considered a mixture of perspectives, experiences and challenges.

One of the main themes that emerged from the conference was the importance of collaboration and partnership. Speakers across all talks stressed the need for companies to work together with governments, NGO’s and other stakeholders to address complex issues such as climate change and poverty as no single organization or sector can solve these problems alone.

The conference also highlighted the importance of transparency and accountability in corporate responsibility. Several speakers emphasized the need for businesses to be open and honest about their practices, and to measure and report on their social and environmental impact. This transparency not only helps to build trust with stakeholders but also allows companies to identify areas for improvement and take corrective action.

From a personal perspective, one of the most inspiring aspects of the conference was the transparency of practical solutions and initiatives shared by speakers and attendees. It was apparent that despite each business’ individual challenges, there are many broad challenges that businesses face in their pursuit to be responsible financially, environmentally and socially. In the panelists discussing these issues with respect to their individual businesses, it was uplifting to see individuals from large businesses so open to sharing best practice so that others could learn and take inspiration from this and then implement these practices into their own business. The protection and preservation of our planet and environment takes priority to commercial advantage and it was a pleasure to see this in practice.

Overall, the event showed that business can be a force for good, and that by working together and prioritizing sustainability, we can create a better future for all. Although we must recognise the challenges afoot, the number of dedicated and motivated individuals working across and with business makes me feel positive for the future.
